Just a little Wacom doodle that turned into some color flats and then into a pseudo-minispeedpaint. I wanted to get down Mal's skin and hair tones, and to play around with his final costume idea. Game-wise, he doesn't look like this yet, but as of last game the other characters learned that Mal was really a boy, and had killed everyone in his last adventuring party. THAT went over well. At least they know why "she" drinks so damn much. Art-wise, I like the pale olive skin tones I came up with, which are partially based on my own. It's warmer, with less yellow. I like how things are looking less anime-like. As much as I like the anime/manga style, I'd like to wander away from it and see where I end up. I like it enough that I'm tossing it here in my normal gallery. It probably won't stay, but I want to show off my favorite D&D character that I've made so far. The "Wild Shadow" is a reference to his class/es. He is a Wilder (psion) and the custom prestige class that ~SR388 came up with for him is "Shadow Warrior", based on The Shadow. I like the idea of combining the names, and let's face it - "Wild Shadow" is just freaking cool-sounding.
And yes, he's wearing a veil. ^_~ Along with eyeshadow and black lipstick.
If you've been paying attention to my scraps you would know that Mal's a cross-dresser. First done out of personal safety as a disguise, he's since learned that it's freaking nice being a pretty girl. He doesn't have to open doors, no one asks him to lift heavy things, guys buy him free drinks... The list goes on. Hence, he'd much rather be known as a "she".
EBERRON FTW! I always liked the idea of Kalashtar, what with the quori and all, but my group hates psionics. had to settle for Aereni priests. still pretty awesome-style-that-fuses-with-distinct-culture. the same goes for the scorpo-drow, halfling barbarian raiders riding dinosaurs, and the carnival of shadows/shadow network. plus many more.
Why is a defender of the path of light killing entire adventuring parties? man, that halfling thing only sounds ridiculous when you say it like that. further proof that eberron is fueled solely on distilled awesome.
Well, Mal is a Wilder, and there generally AREN'T any Kalashtar Wilders. You know Eberron, so I'm sure you can understand why. When I mentioned to the party in the beginning one of the higher-class characters (who was familiar with Kalashtar) was like "WTF? a Kalashtar WILDER? And you're drinking and smoking! What is up with THAT?" I think I broke him because of that. BWAHAHAHAA! Mal's a freak, and I love him for it. I mean, even amongst wilders he's an oddity. They normally grow up "wild", usually as orphans or having been abandoned in the woods because people feared their psionic powers. Mal has parents, siblings, and proper training in the monastery. His unstable nature is too volatile for most Kalashtar, though. They generally keep at least five feet away from him; more, if they can help it. Mal teeters on the brink of madness, and the Kalashtar as so sensitive to emotion (at least from all the books I've read) that I reason just being near him would probably not be so good for their "delicate" consitutions. Then again, this is all about taking what info you've got (frankly, not that much when it comes to the Kalashtar) and then adding things in that make it more "real". Although I have found the key to playing a psion is to play it as balanced as you can. Mal is a Kalashtar, and is thus in hiding from the Dreaming Dark. As such, he rarely uses any terribly blatant displays of his psionic power. In fact, he tries to avoid it to escape detection by them. Most Wilders are quite flamboyant with their powers, but Mal, like all Kalashtar, has been trained to keep things quiet. So the key is in how you play it. I'm the only psion in the group, but even powers/stats-wise I am by no means the strongest player. That would be Pooka, our kickass Elven fighter chick. ^_^ If you want some backstory on Mal - [link] More bits of the Mal evolution - He looks like this now that he's evil - [link] A little 2-page "story" concerning Malkhad - [link]
