Minos - Filigree Earrings

Description

Some more filigree fun-ness ^_^

These came from watching a ton of ancient history documentaries, looking at ancient jewelry, and playing waaaaaay too much CivCity: Rome.

Did I mention that I'm a HUGE history nut and a total Latin Geek?

I also wanted to play with some of my forming tools and practice my filigree, so this is what I came up with. I made the filigree "cage" from sterling silver (inspired by all the lovely curls and waves you see in Minoan art), cut out discs from copper sheet, filed everything nice and pretty, drilled some holes, then domed the hell out of them. Once they fit together nicely, I soldered them together and ran them through my newest toy, a rotary tumbler! It didn't give the insides the total mirror finish that I wanted, but it polished it up in a way that would haev been impossible to do by hand.* I put them on some sterling ear wires and viola! Pretty earrings with some body that are really lightweight. ^_^

These are my test pieces and will stay with me (oh no, more jewelry, however will I cope?) but I like these so much I'm going to be making more. Perhaps I'll add a stone to the center of the filigree "star", or at least a little silver ball...? What do you think?

Sterling Silver, Copper

*Okay, maybe not impossible, but incredibly impractical and too risky for the delicate fligree cages.

I'm in love with these earings! That pattern you've created is amazing and pairs well with the color of gem that you've chosen. Do you have these for sale at your store? I'd love to see an aquamarine version. :D
